If you have A negative blood you can donate to anyone with a blood type of A or AB regardless of the positive or negative, however if you have A negative blood you can only receive A- or O- blood.
Who can receive O positive blood? Anyone with an Rh positive blood type can receive O positive red blood cells – so that's A positive, B positive and AB positive as well as O positive. That means 3 in 4 people, or around 76% of the population, can benefit from your donation.
Is the blood group A+ and A1+ the same? Persons who are in primary blood groups (also known as blood type) A and AB can be further tested to determine a more specific subgroup (also known as a subtype). Subtypes for blood type A include A1, A2, Ax, Aint and others, but the most common is A1.
Why is A negative blood important? A negative red blood cells can be used to treat around 40% of the population. However, A negative platelets are particularly important because they can be given to people from all blood groups. That's why A negative platelets are called the 'universal platelet type'.
