noon At latitude 23° S, called the Tropic of Capricorn, the Sun passes through the zenith at noon. Days are longer in the Southern Hemisphere and shorter in the north. In the United States and Southern Europe, there may be only 9 or 10 hours of sunshine during the day.
A nswer: The Sun in Los Angels is never directly overhead, it is the highest on June 21 and lowest on December 21. Explanation: Los Angeles, by being at 34 degrees North, is out of the zone where it can get direct sunlight.
The Sun reaches the observer’s zenith when it is 90° above the horizon, and this only happens between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The Sun can be seen at the zenith only once during the year when north of the equator. The Sun can be seen at the zenith only once during the year when south of the equator. The north celestial pole can be seen at the zenith.
Once or twice each year, people who live at lower latitudes (within 23.5 degrees of the equator) can see the sun reach the zenith, an imaginary point directly overhead. The path the sun takes on these days—from sunrise through zenith, to sunset—is called the zenith passage.
The short answer to your question is simply “noon.” Astronomical noon is defined to be the time of day when the Sun is highest in the sky.
Tropic of Cancer You may have noticed two special lines of latitude on a globe of the world: One in the Northern Hemisphere called the Tropic of Cancer at +23.5° latitude and one in the Southern Hemisphere called the Tropic of Capricorn at − 23.5° latitude. These are the latitudes where the Sun is directly overhead at noon once a year.
You figure when the sun is at the zenith by using a sextant. The index and horizon mirrors make it as though the sun were at the horizon, and you watch it rise and set along the horizon.
If you have a stick driven into ground in such a manner that it is normal to Earth surface (to be taken as flat ignoring the very mild curvature), watch the shadow of stick. Where it is shortest, without looking towards Sun, assume that as the zenith position. Immediately after that, shadow will start lengthening.
