All the player can do is enter the Temple and fight shadow creatures and a banshee in the lower levels. If they don't do the Defender of the Light quest, then they have the option to buy the Temple of Shadows for approximately 100,000 gold after returning from the Tattered Spire.

This worked for me...keep in mind that I had a lot of money...donate at the donation bowl....10,000gold will do...after that...donate another 10,000 gold at noon...if done correctly you will receive one of the hidden legendary weapons then the quest will vanish from your quest screen
