When you speak to him, pockets full of live animals, there will be a new prompt that says “I found a creature!”. Choose this, and give him five of them.

You should donate your first fossil rather than sell it to one of Animal Crossing New Horizons' Nooks. Whenever you get a brand new fossil that you haven't dug up before, it's best to donate to Blather so you can add to the Museum (which is by far the best building in the game).

Blathers will arrive and set up his tent the day after you've donated these items. Upon talking to him in his tent, you'll learn that Blathers needs 15 more donations before he can open his museum. These donations can be a variety of fossils, sea creatures, bugs and fish.
In the original Animal Crossing games for the GameCube, you had to mail your fossils to the Faraway Museum, now all you have to do is visit Blathers in the Museum.
