Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, endorsed Hillary Clinton for president on Wednesday. Schultz is one of the country's most politically outspoken chief executives, but until now he had not taken sides in the 2016 race between Democrat Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Schultz said one of the proudest moments in the entire history of Starbucks was when the company had baristas write " Race Together " on cups in the months after the fatal police shooting of a young African American man named Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
Schultz, who call s himself a "life-long Democrat," endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008 and again in 2012. He has donated only to Democrats over the years, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, with the exception of one donation to Republican Senator John McCain in the late 1990s.
The Starbucks CEO has a long history of advocating for civic engagement. In a speech to Starbucks shareholders last spring, the billionaire exec said he fears the opportunities that allowed him to achieve his American Dream -- he grew up in subsidized housing in Brooklyn -- have fallen out of the grasp of too many people.

Schultz’s approach to the election is in stark contrast to that of other deep-pocketed former presidential hopefuls Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg endorsed Biden immediately after dropping out of the primary for the Democratic nomination in March, and Steyer followed in April.

Netflix-related donors also gave $58,160 to Bernie Sanders and $42,129 to Elizabeth Warren. Co-CEO Reed Hastings has been a huge Democratic Party booster this cycle. In September, he donated $1 million to Senate Majority PAC, the party’s main US Senate fundraising vehicle, along with another $1 million in June.
Amazon’s PAC contributed just over $1 million to the total spending, including a $5,000 donation from CEO Jeff Bezos. In 2018, Bezos made his first big political donation: $10 million to the With Honor Fund, a bipartisan group that works to elect military veterans.
A whopping $3.66 million went to the Joe Biden campaign. The tech giant also gave nearly $1 million to Bernie Sanders and $700,000 to Elizabeth Warren. The Democrat super PAC, Future Forward USA, and the DNC are the two largest institutional beneficiaries, receiving $2.5 million and $1.9 million respectively.
The DNC received approximately $347,000, while the RNC, the top Republican beneficiary, also got $216,000.
Also a major donor in the 2020 election season, Microsoft’s PACs and employees shelled out a total $17 million to presidential and congressional candidates through individual and PAC donations. Three quarters of Microsoft’s funds went to Democrats, and 14 percent went to Republicans.
Twitter employees and their family members contributed $689,000 in the 2020 election cycle, mostly to Democrat presidential candidates. Aside from top recipient Joe Biden, who received $157,000, no other candidates received outsized donations. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders each received between $30,000 to $46,000.
Employees and PACs affiliated with Facebook donated a total of $6 million during the 2020 election cycle. More than 92 percent of the funds came from individuals. Mirroring Google’s and Microsoft’s partisan splits, Facebook spent nearly 80 percent of the funds on Democrats and only 10 percent on Republicans.
