President Donald Trump’s decision to donate his salary to support causes within the federal government has been admirable, but also noteworthy is that just months after taking office, he donated $1 million of his own money to support hurricane victims.
Trump was of course one of many who donated to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Additionally, Trump donated $100,000 to both Samaritan’s Purse and Reach Out America.
Samaritan’s Purse has remained engaged in Texas in the years since the storm, “helping more than 1,150 families get back into their homes through rebuild and repair programs as well as a manufactured home replacement program.”
The total damage done by the storm was $125 billion, second only to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Mr. Trump has the heart for donations. He donated his first two-quarters of his presidential pay to the National Park Service and the Department of Education. The first couple visited Corpus Christi in Texas on Tuesday and are scheduled to travel to Texas and Lousiana on Saturday.
Also in September 2017, Trump’s inaugural committee announced that it would donate $3 million divided evenly to three organizations involved in hurricane relief efforts — a pledge that was reflected in the committee’s subsequent tax filings.
Social media users, however, have spread an unsupported claim that President Donald Trump has personally donated $1 million to hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas. “Trump, in his hurtful, hateful, racist, Nazi fashion, just donated $1 MILLION of his own money to the Bahamas Relief Fund,” one post reads. Some commenters praised the supposed news.
Previous hoaxes have falsely claimed that Trump and his family donated $1 billion to a fund for a wall at the southern border ( they didn’t ) and that the president donated a whole year’s salary to “repair military cemeteries” — which is false, though he does donate his salary to various causes in quarterly increments, as we’ve explained.
President Trump has acted on his promise to donate $1 million of his personal fortune to charities helping with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, the White House said.
Reach Out America said in a Facebook post two days before the White House announced the recipients that they had received a $100,000 donation from Trump.
Since then, however, the president has fulfilled his promise to donate his presidential salary, giving his first quarter pay to the National Parks Service and his second-quarter salary to the Department of Education.
The committee had raised an unprecedented $107 million for the inauguration.
Habitat for Humanity confirmed to The Hill the organization had received a check from the president and first lady Melania Trump.
The Red Cross, which was slated to receive one of the larger donations from Trump, did not confirm a specific donation, however a spokesperson told The Hill the organization was “grateful to the Trumps for their generous support of our mission.”
The Hill confirmed with multiple groups that they received the funds this week.
