How is cremation done?

Cremation is performed at a licensed crematory and is done to prepare the Donor’s remains for final disposition. The process consists of placing the Donor’s remains in a cremation chamber where they are subjected to intense heat and flame. Only bone fragments and some fine metals remain after cremation. Any metallic substances will be disposed of by the crematory in a non-recoverable manner so that only bone fragments remain. Following a cooling period, the cremated remains are gathered from the cremation chamber. Although reasonable efforts are made to remove all of the cremated remains from the chamber, it is impossible to remove all of them, as some dust and other residues from the process will be left behind. Due to the repeated use of the chamber, a small amount of mixing with remains from previous cremations is a possibility, and you need to understand and accept this fact in order to authorize the cremation. The skeletal remains often will contain recognizable bone fragments. These fragments will be mechanically pulverized which may cause incidental mixing with the residue from previously pulverized remains. It is impossible to recover all of the dust and residue from the cremation and processing. The collected remains of a Donor, which are virtually unrecognizable as human remains, will be placed into a designated container.

Can you cremate a body?

A: Yes. In addition to cremation, an option for the donor may be in having their entire body preserved through a process called plastination. This is a process, which the body remains as a permanent model for educational purposes. If this is the donor’s desire and the University agrees to plastinate, such consent may be withheld for any reason, the body will NOT be cremated, and will not be returned to the family.

Can you donate to another medical school if you pass away?

However, you or your family/estate may transfer your donation to another Program/medical school in your new area. Please call the Program and we will be happy to assist you or your family in this process.

Can you cancel anatomical donation?

A: Yes. You reserve the right to cancel at any time by a phone call or letter to the Anatomical Donation Program. The program forms that are completed, at the time of donation will be removed from the donor files and destroyed.

We do not return remains to the family because we continue to utilize the skeletal remains in research indefinitely. The skeleton is retained and curated in the Bass Donated Skeletal Collection.

Can you visit the bones of a family member?

Once skeletal remains are accessioned into the Bass Donated Skeletal Collection, you may visit the remains of a family member. A visit to the outdoor research facility is not permitted.

Do you need to notarize a donation form?

No, the donation forms do not need to be notarized. We do not require notarized documents. However, if you wish to have your forms notarized, the notary can act as your witness.

Do you have to embalm a body?

No, in fact we require that bodies NOT be embalmed. It is not required by law in most states. The exceptions to this are for transporting a body out of the states of Alaska, New Jersey, and Alabama. Typically this is when they are transported via common carrier. However exceptions may be made for anatomical gifts. We can work with the funeral home in these states to ensure proper transport.

Can you have a funeral if you don't tell your family?

We strongly recommend that you discuss your wishes with your family. If you do not tell them, they may not have any idea of your wishes. This may result in a traditional funeral, burial, or cremation of your body rather than donation.

Do we honor special requests?

Yes, we will attempt to honor any special requests within reason. This may be limited by the particular research requirements ongoing at the time of donation. We put all requests on file so that they are known to us when we receive a body.

Does FAC charge for body donation?

The FAC does not charge for body donations. The only expense may be as a result of transporting your body to our facility if you are more than 100 miles from Knoxville, outside the state of Tennessee, or if you are at a private residence or hospice.

Mayo Clinic's procedure for accepting a whole-body donation begins with notification of a donor's death. A health care representative from the hospital, medical facility or hospice organization where the death occurs should contact Mayo Clinic's donor program coordinator. The coordinator will review acceptance protocol to determine if the donation can be accepted. If the potential donor meets the acceptance criteria, the next of kin will be contacted to determine if whole-body donation should proceed. Transportation of the body to Mayo Clinic will then be arranged.
