Glenn Simpson —the founder of Fusion GPS, the Washington DC research company which commissioned former British spy Christopher Steele to compile the notorious dossier alleging Trump's ensnarement by Russian intelligence—alleged that Russian agents had penetrated the NRA in his testimony to the House Intelligence Committee in November last year.
A liberal group will on Monday file a request for the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to launch an investigation into whether the National Rifle Association took contributions from Russians, which were then illegally channeled to the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, NPR reported.
No public evidence that the NRA took Russian money has emerged, and spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told NPR "The National Rifle Association has not been contacted by the FBI or any other investigative body."
However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump – triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors.
However, Torshin was seated with the candidate’s son, Donald Trump Jr., during a private dinner on the sidelines of a May 2016 NRA event during the convention in Louisville, according to an account Torshin gave to Bloomberg.
It is illegal to use foreign money to influence federal elections. It’s unclear how long the Torshin inquiry has been ongoing, but the news comes as Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s sweeping investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including whether the Kremlin colluded with Trump’s campaign, has been heating up.
Even as the NRA has attacked the American news media with incendiary videos stoking hostility, the news media has been reporting on apparent links between the NRA and the Kremlin — most recently revealing a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into whether a Kremlin-linked banker used the gun lobby organization to help the Trump campaign.
