The process for donating your adult-size beanies and or NICU blankets is simple.

At a time when their lives are in enough turmoil, perhaps having a cap someone has made just for them, will bring some renewed hope into their life. Please help today.

What yarn should I use for caps?

A few helpful guideines for making caps. 1) Softer yarns: cotton, baby yarn, soft worsted like 'Caron Simply Soft' or 'Lion Brand Pound of Love' are more comfortable to wear, and cotton is really nice for summer. 2) Thinner, seamless (crochet or knit in the round), non-lumpy caps for sleeping/increased comfort on the recipients heads.

Halos for Hope – Chemo Caps

Halos of Hope volunteers distribute crocheted, knitted, and sewn caps to over 450 cancer centers each month. By working with local yarn shops, crochet and knitting guilds, community groups, and the annual STITCHES events, Halos of Hope is able to extend their reach.

The best “chemo caps” are made with love using soft yarn with minimal seaming. Remember that patients will have very sensitive scalps. Chemotherapy has a strong impact on the immune system, so patients will often machine wash and dry anything worn in treatment to remove germs. For all of these reasons, extra care must be taken when choosing yarns.

The best way to assemble these hats is to use the factory production method: 1 With right sides together, fold the crown in half and stitch the center back seam. 2 With right sides together, fold the band in half and stitch the center back seam. 3 With wrong sides together, fold the band in half lengthwise. 4 With right sides together, pin the top (circle) to the upper edge of the crown and stitch. When you sew the crown to the top, have the top (circle) on the bottom and gently hold the midway points between the pins with your finger. 5 Turn the cap right side out. 6 With right sides together and matching seams, sew the band to the crown using a zig-zag stitch with a 2 width and 2 length and keeping a little bit of tension to help with the stretch.
