Why the GA Senate runoffs are winnable

First, let’s review how we got here. In both races, the lead candidate failed to hit the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff. Ossoff came within 100k votes of Perdue, out of 5 million votes (about 2%), with a libertarian candidate garnering 115k.

Where to donate

Things are moving fast on the ground in GA with so little time before the runoffs. We’ve been doing a ton of reading and talking with folks about how to have an impact, and learned about many groups that are doing great work to mobilize GA voters, including the candidates themselves, community organizers, and Dem party groups.

Where to volunteer

Organizations are already standing up phone-banks and postcard mailing efforts for the runoffs, and we assume text-banking will get going soon as well.

What are the Senate runoffs?

In Georgia, a candidate has to win a majority of the overall vote to win the election, a rule that was originally created in the 1960s to limit the power of Black politicians in the state. According to the New York Times, if no one breaks 50 percent, then the two candidates who got the most votes move onto a runoff election against each other.

Who are the candidates in the runoff races?

Perdue, a former CEO, is finishing up his first year as senator. He made headlines earlier in 2020 for questions around his investments, including stocks purchased in a company that supplies personal protective equipment, which people use to avoid getting COVID-19, on the same day the Senate had a members-only meeting about the pandemic.

Why are the Georgia runoffs especially important?

As it stands, following the 2020 election, the new U.S. Senate will consist of 46 Democrats, two independents who caucus with Democrats, 50 Republicans, and then whoever wins these two races in Georgia.

How voting is going so far

In early January, CNN reported that while a runoff election would typically see a "massive decline" in turnout, more than three million voters have already cast ballots in Georgia, exceeding all previous Georgia runoffs by about a million voters.

How to register, spread the word, donate, and volunteer

After a long election night—or really election week—we finally got a clear understanding of who the next president of the United States would be.

Get registered, then spread the word

The deadline to register to vote is in order to participate in the January runoff elections is Monday, December 7. So be sure to register, especially if you’ve just turned or are about to turn 18, recently moved to a new county, gotten married and changed your name, had your legal record expunged, or became a citizen.

Request an absentee ballot as soon as possible

Seeing as COVID-19 will still be a significant threat well after the January runoff elections, it’s wise to request an absentee ballot if you’re uncomfortable hitting the polls in-person.

Help fight voter suppression

One of the leading factors that causes eligible voters in Georgia to be unable to cast their votes electronically and submit one of those dreaded provisional ballots is the inability to present a government-issued photo ID.

Work to increase voter turnout

We’ve all gotten one—but probably much, much more—of those texts that remind you to vote in the election, and while they probably annoyed the hell out of anyone who had already planned to vote, they could have inspired someone who hadn’t even considered it.

Work on election day 2.0

Consider being a civil servant for a day and working as an official poll worker on Election Day. Applying to be one is as simple as emailing your country officials and, after you’ve gone through training on how the election process and voting equipment works, you’ll be able to serve somewhere in the county that you’re registered to vote in.

Provide voters with a safe and comfortable voting experience

As finicky as Georgia weather is, residents know just how cold it can get in December and especially January. Keep that in mind because those ridiculously long lines from November’s general election are likely to make a return this winter.

One important caveat

Everyone across the country can help, but it is incredibly important to remember that we MUST listen to the people in Georgia. There is no room for error, and we owe it to the incredible organizers in the state who were able to flip the state blue for Joe Biden. They know, better than any of us, what messages will resonate with the voters.

Ways to help

Funding the candidates directly as well as the amazing grassroots organizations who flipped the state blue for Biden is of the upmost importance. If you can give, please give. If you can’t, consider sharing these links on your social media accounts.

One final note

I can’t stress enough how important it is for us to win these two Senate seats. Without them, expect that no progressive legislation will get passed. There is something on this list that everyone can do — I hope you’ll find some time each week between now and January 5th to help.
