The shoes that aren’t sent for re-use are broken down into raw materials: a process which begins by shredding them into tiny pieces. A variety of techniques are then used to separate out the different categories of raw materials.

Step 3

The running shoes have now been separated into five categories of raw materials - rubber, leather, fluff, metal and foam – and can be recycled for a variety of new purposes.
