Catching koi fish and gold fish in a fully filled pond is a lot trickier than it looks on youtube videos. After years of practice, I finally learned how to do it and can select one koi or goldfish out of a full pond pretty easily. But to do this, you really need to have a proper koi pond net. They are large in diameter but very shallow in depth.

Several alternatives exist for getting rid of an unwanted fish. Individuals should consider returning it to a local pet shop for resale or trade, or giving it to another hobbyist including an aquarium in a professional office, museum, school, nursing home or to a public aquarium or zoological park.

Contact the store where the plant or fish was purchased for proper handling advice or possible return. Give or trade with another aquarist, pond owner, or water gardener. Donate to a local aquarium society, school, or aquatic business. Seal aquatic plants in plastic bags and dispose in trash.
Rather than euthanize an unwanted Koi or goldfish, or even finding a friend to give it to, some Koi and goldfish owners will release unwanted fish into the wild, and hope that they will have a good life... This is HORRIBLE for lots of reasons!Jan 25, 2017

The water in your koi’s transportation container should be as close to their normal pond water as possible. To make this easier, you can simply use water from the pond. If you want to use different water, make sure its pH is the same as the pond. The water temperature also needs to be as similar as possible to that of the pond, while being within parameters ideal for transportation conditions (which usually means somewhere between 50 and 80 degrees).
This could occur for many reasons, including moving to a smaller or pondless location or venturing far enough away that transport becomes too difficult.
The common rule of thumb is that a pond should contain at least 10 gallons of water for each inch of fish. Keep in mind that koi can grow to around 21-24 inches or more.
An average koi lives 25-35 years, but it has the potential to live much longer. In captivity, koi lifespans can nearly triple that of a human, with the oldest known koi in history living 226 years. Of course, most koi won’t make it close to that, but, in short, it is possible that your koi will outlive you.
Rehoming a koi can be a safe and satisfying experience when done correctly and ethically. This means thinking about the long-term wellbeing of the koi rather than immediate convenience. Here are a few “dos” and “don’ts” of rehoming.
This should go without saying. However, it’s not all that uncommon to read in the newspaper about local water systems that are unexpectedly growing a koi population because owners chose to dump their koi rather than responsibly rehome them. Never put your koi in a river, stream, lake, or other body of water. Koi were not meant to survive in those waters, and they will disrupt the ecosystem and endanger aquatic life that is living there naturally.
