Founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter and activist, Harry Chapin, our organization is dedicated to serving Long Island's hungry and food insecure populations. Long Island Cares is one of almost 200 food banks across America that provides food to people impacted by hunger and food insecurity.
The food banks distribute food and grocery items through food pantries and meal programs that serve families, children, seniors, and individuals at risk of hunger.

Sometimes life presents unexpected challenges such as a major illness, job loss, family tragedy or change in marital status. These circumstances often make it difficult to cover all family expenses and that’s where our food pantry can be of service.
During the pandemic the pantry is temporarily unavailable for inside shopping visits. Pantry clients are currently receiving pre-packaged bags of staple groceries, produce and meat between the hours of 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday).
In order to qualify for assistance, a social worker meets with the individual making the request and determines if they are eligible for assistance. At that time, the social worker can also inform the individual of other assistance programs.
New Trier Township is consistently ranked among the wealthiest areas in the United States. Adversity, however, knows no boundaries. Our clients face job loss, devastating illness, divorce, underemployment or other unforeseen life circumstances that prompt them to seek our assistance.
The township pantry is primarily supported by donations from the public (individual donors) or organized food and fund drives. A small line item allocation is available within the township budget to purchase food through local vendors. No donation is too small- all are appreciated.
Despite an improving economy and lower unemployment rates, many of our clients are working several part-time jobs, or are now underemployed after the Great Recession. Your township food pantry presently serves the needs of over 100 households per month, representing about 250 persons.
