Donating Furniture and Household Items

Open Doors collects and stores furniture, appliances, and household items generously given to us by the Madison community, and uses these items to furnish apartments for new refugee families. This is a crucial and initial part of helping welcome them into a safe, warm, and inviting home as they start new lives here in Madison.

Current Donation Needs

Furniture: area rugs, couches, love-seats, living room chairs, small low book cases, dressers, chests, storage cubes, dining tables (especially tables 42” wide or less), end/bedside/tv/coffee tables, small tables and chairs appropriate for kids, floor and table lamps

Items Collected by Open Doors

This is a comprehensive list of the items we collect and use to stock apartments for new arrivals, but our needs vary depending on what we have in storage. For our most current list of needed items, please see our Facebook page. We ask that donated items be clean and either new or gently used and in good condition. Thank you for your generosity!

Items We Cannot Accept

Bed frames, mattresses, box springs, child car seats, clothing, non-stick cookware, queen or king sheet sets, wine glasses, recliners, luggage, bookshelves, hutches, down blankets, gliders, recliners, strollers, high chairs, coffee makers, and other small kitchen appliances.

Clothes

Journey’s End can only accept winter coats and jackets for children and adults (no XL-XXL sizes, please), mittens and gloves, and scarves and hats, due to a lack of storage space. All items must be new or gently-used and clean (no donations exposed to cigarette smoke or pet hair, please).

Donation Drives

We always welcome businesses, faith groups, schools, clubs, and even individuals who are interested in doing donation drives for our refugee clients.

Furniture

Journey's End accepts very limited donations of couches, kitchen tables, chairs, and bedroom dressers, on an as-needed basis. PLEASE - no furniture from households with smokers or pets. We provide our clients with furniture that is not stained, damaged, or torn. Everything must be clean and in very good condition.
