At The Hygiene Bank, we believe it is not right that feeling clean should be a luxury or a privilege for anyone in our society, yet many are living in poverty and cannot afford to stay clean. That is why our network of projects exists – to give people access to the basics they need.

What is Hygiene Poverty?

Many people locked in poverty or those who find themselves in times of crisis often experience restricted options. This leaves them caught between being able to heat their home, pay their rent, buy food or keep clean. Hygiene poverty can be shaming, humiliating and excluding and can result in social isolation.

How we work

Products are donated, collected, sorted and distributed to our network of community partners - a mix of organisations, charities and schools - who support those of us pulled into poverty.

Products we collect

We collect new, unused, in-date personal care and household cleaning essentials - including deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, make-up, nappies, toilet roll, laundry detergent and surface cleaner. If you need them and use them, then it is likely someone else needs and uses them too.

What is Women in Training?

Created by two 12-year-old twins, Women In Training advocates for menstrual equity, menstrual education, and engages girls and non-binary youth, ages 10 to 18, in community service and social justice. Currently, the organization is supplying kits to youth in this age demo that include sanitary pads, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner. The goal of the Sanitary Pad Project is to keep girls from missing school due to their periods. Quilters from across the country are joining together to create reusable, sanitary pads for teenage girls in GCP’s Scheel Center and Dreamer Center.
