The Raleigh Community Kickstand is an all-volunteer, non-profit community bicycle cooperative project located in Raleigh, NC and established in 2017. We are currently partnering with homeless resource centers in the Raleigh area to repair bicycles and teach maintenance skills.

We are volunteers who repair bicycles, teach bicycle maintenance, and connect community resources in order to enable access to safe, reliable, self-sufficient transportation to those in need.

Anyone who wants to help repair bikes in their own home on their own schedule can participate in our Adopt-A-Bike program.

Donate your bikes

The Raleigh Community Kickstand could not serve the community without donations of bicycles and other parts. We rebuild your old bicycles and collect spare parts for repairs to make sure everyone in the community has the ability to get where they need to go. We accept fully intact, repairable adult bicycles (24" tires or larger).

Donate your time

The Raleigh Community Kickstand is entirely volunteer operated. Without people like you, we would not be able to make these services available. We are always looking for additional volunteers to help repair bikes and manage administrative tasks.

Donate your resources

If you work for an organization or company that has grant funding opportunities or discount programs for charity-based non-profits, please let us know. We are always in need of funding for consumable parts such as tires, tubes, brake pads, etc.

WHAT IS SHIFTING GEARS?

Shifting Gears started at the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Feb. 2006. In 2011, the program moved to Putnamville Correctional Facility. The purpose of the program is to obtain used bicycles through donations for repair, renovation and distribution to underprivileged children and others in need.

HOW IT WORKS

Used bicycles can donated to the Shifting Gears program at any Bicycle Garage Indy location. Nine13sports issues tax-deductions for the donated bikes. Under the direction of Indiana Department of Correction staff, inmates learn to repair bicycles and get a sense of accomplishment.

REQUESTING BICYCLE DONATIONS

Non-profit organizations may request up to 25 bikes on behalf of their clients. Shifting Gears does not give bikes to individuals. If you are an individual in need of a bike, please contact a non-profit organization that can make a request on your behalf.
