You really don't have to donate money at all to the camp if you don't want, but you get a bit of honor each time you do. Personally I don't really donate money, and if I want to upgrade something at the camp I just use my actual cash on hand to do it.
I'd say that the universal Red Dead Redemption 2 best camp upgrades for every player would be the Lodging Tier 2 and Lodging Tier 3. Tier 2 will encourage your gang to donate more money to the camp, while also opening up the investment opportunity into Tier 3.Nov 4, 2019

Is it worth upgrading camp RDR2? While it's possible to blow money on shopping sprees and other… luxuries, you'll probably want to invest some of your earnings into the camp. While some players will just want to quickly unlock Fast Travel and be done with it, it really is worth planning out additional upgrades.

Once you unlock Fast Travel you can also access it at Arthur's tent. At the start, you'll only be able to find Revolver and Pistol ammo from time to time, but once you gain the ability to upgrade the camp, you can restock supplies as needed or improve things by ordering better ammo.
The Horse Station is another useful upgrade. If you ever lose your trusty steed, then this upgrade lets you call them back to camp. It also lets you manage your owned horses more conveniently, letting you retrieve stabled horses more quickly.
Early on in the game, you’ll get access to the tithing box in your camp. It will allow you to donate money and items to the gang. You might wonder what good it does you to give stuff away this way. In short, it will increase the gang’s morale.
If you aren’t short on money, the easiest way to donate food, ammo or supplies to the camp is through the ledger. The first few pages have options to restock at the bottom, allowing you to buy more of what you have, be it food, ammunition or medicine.
This part is a bit unintuitive, and lots of people are struggling with it. You aren’t supposed to bring the carcass yourself. Leave it on the horse, dismount and walk up to Pearson. Select the option to donate, and once the satchel’s open, go all the way to the right, to the horse cargo tab.
